The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ ክርስቲያን, romanized:&#;Yä-ityopp'ya ortodoks täwahədo betä krəstiyan)[1] is the largest of the Oriental Orthodox Churches. One of the few Christian churches in sub-Saharan Africa originating before European colonization of the continent,[5] the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church dates back to the Christianization of the Kingdom of Aksum in ,[6] and has between 36 million and 51 million adherents in Ethiopia.[2][3][4] It is a founding member of the World Council of Churches.[7] The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is in communion with the other Oriental Orthodox churches (the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the Syriac Orthodox Church).

    Etiopiens historia

    Etiopien plats en forntida benämning dels i vidsträckt bemärkelse vid södra delen av den då kända jorden (det vill yttra Afrika söder om Egypten och Libyska öknen samt sydvästra Asien), dels inom inskränkt fras landet söder om Egypten vid övre Nilen mellan Libyska öknen och Röda havet (omfattande Nubien samt Abessinien jämte Kurdufan samt Darfur). Invånarna kallades etiopier (grekiska: aithiopes, "de från solen brända"[1]), och ur denna redan hos Homeros förekommande benämning har landets namn härletts. Etiopierna omtalades även från Herodotos, Ptolemaios och Plinius den äldre. Etiopiernas nation beskrivs från de gamla författarna likt hem till en uråldrig civilisation samt en område där gudarna inhämtade visdom. Denna mytologiska beskrivning gäller inte speciellt dagens Etiopien utan Afrika och södra Indien utan åtskillnad.
