In , Samuel Whitmarsh planted 25 acres (10&#;ha) of mulberry trees in Florence, Massachusetts in order to raise silkworms. Whitmarsh opened a silk mill in nearby Leeds, Massachusetts and it was briefly run as a communal planerat arbete by the Northampton Association of Education and Industry, a utopian community of abolitionists who believed that the rights of all should be "equal without distinction of sex, color or condition, sect or religion".

Sojourner Truth, a former slave who became a nationally known advokat for equality and justice, was a member of this community (she had moved to Florence in ). After the community dissolved in , she bought a house on Park Street, where she lived until A memorial stat

William Skinner and Sons

William Skinner & Sons, generally sold under the names Skinner's Satin, Skinner's Silk, and Skinner Fabrics, was an American textile manufacturer specializing in silk products, specifically woven satins with mills in Holyoke, main sales offices in New York, and a series of nationwide satellite offices in Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Rochester, and St. Louis.[2] Founded in by William Skinner as a partnership between himself and his brother-in-law at that time, the company was first established at a long-term location in Haydenville in , as the Unquomonk Silk Mills.
